Disrupting Genocide Chelsea Exhibition

The Problem: As part of stat-sponsored assimilation efforts, three million Muslim Uyghur people have been detained in western China since 2017. Detainees are subjected to re-education efforts, and forced labor for major corporations that implicate almost 20 global industries.
The Solution: Create a gallery exhibition that spotlights the corporations that are complicit in those supply chains, including Tesla, Apple, and Nike. Corporate opacity and opaque practices leave consumers in the dark about the origins of these products. “Made in China” calls to light the hidden human cost hiding within these everyday products.
The Impact: A fully attended gallery opening in Chelsea, NYC, with exhibits calling out fashion, automotive, technology, and food industries.

I created these large format print files, meticulously laying out every one of the 3,000+ detainee photos. This image represents only a fraction of the total detainees impacted in China. Each photo in this image represents 600 of the total number of Uyghurs who have been detained and subjected to Chinese “re-education”.

The layout of this back room contrasts the wall of detainee photos with photos of a vibrant Uyghur life, food, markets, and prayer.
